Fourteen hours, told by the clock
This is a long day and it is worth seeing how it divides before you commit to it. The drive is roughly four hours each way, which leaves the middle of the day for the island itself.
- Early morning — Meet at Église Notre-Dame de Compassion, 16 Place du Général Kœnig in the 17th. A City Wonders representative waits on the right of the church, holding a sign.
- The drive out — About four hours by air-conditioned coach, with commentary on Mont Saint-Michel and a comfort stop with restrooms on the way.
- Arrival — Into the mainland car park, then the free shuttle across to the rock. The shuttle sets down 350 metres from the gate.
- Your four hours — Orientation from the guide, then the day is yours: the abbey with your included ticket and the audio app, the ramparts, the Grande Rue, lunch.
- Regroup — Back to the coach for the return leg.
- Evening — Into Paris. This service ends at Porte Maillot rather than at the morning meeting point, which is worth knowing when you plan your evening.
Four scheduled hours is not four hours inside the walls. The shuttle queue and the climb come out of the same budget, and travellers on this trip say so. Go straight up to the abbey on arrival and save the village for afterwards — the planning page sets out the order that works.

Food and drink are not in the fare, and the coach has its own rule about eating on board — one traveller bought snacks at the rest stop and could not take them onto the bus. Lunch on the Grande Rue is the simpler plan.

Where it starts, and where it ends
The meeting point is Église Notre-Dame de Compassion, 16 Place du Général Kœnig, 75017 Paris. It stands at the junction of the boulevard d’Aurelle de Paladines and the Avenue de la Porte des Ternes. Look for the representative with a sign on the right as you face the church. The return drops you at Porte Maillot, a few minutes away but not the same spot.
Know before you go
- Download the app first. Credentials arrive on your voucher. Once downloaded it works offline, but you need your own headphones and a charged phone.
- Cover knees and shoulders. Required for men and women alike to enter the abbey.
- Wear shoes you can climb in. Around 350 steps between the gate and the west terrace, with no lift.
- There is no hotel pickup. Make your own way to the meeting point in the 17th.

Loved Mont Saint-Michel, less so the logistics. The coach was clean, but food and were not allowed on board and nobody had said so before the group bought snacks at the rest stop. The island was very crowded by the time they arrived.

Do tours include the abbey ticket?
Most do, and the ones that do not say so. Both cruise excursions from Le Havre leave abbey admission out, one island walking tour includes it only on certain booking grades, and one private walk excludes entrance tickets entirely.
How do I get to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris?
There is no direct train. Public transport means a TGV to Rennes and a connecting bus, around four hours each way, which is why almost everyone travelling from Paris books a coach or minivan day trip instead.
How long do I need at Mont Saint-Michel?
About four hours is what most organised departures allow, and it is enough for the abbey, the ramparts and lunch without hurrying. Under three hours and the shuttle queue starts eating into the abbey.
What time should I arrive to avoid the crowds?
Before ten in the morning or after four in the afternoon. The coach parties from Paris arrive in the middle of the day, which is exactly when travellers describe the Grande Rue as hard to move along.
